St. Luke’s Medical Center celebrates 100-year anniversary

[PHOENIX] – On the anniversary of the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing, St. Luke’s Medical Center will celebrate its centennial anniversary. What stands today as a 226-bed tertiary medical center specializing in heart care, orthopedics, emergency services, cardiopulmonary services and physical rehabilitation began as a 20-bed facility dedicated to serving patients with tuberculosis.

St. Luke’s Medical Center has led the way in Arizona with its many achievements in medicine, including:

  • Arizona’s first cardiac catheterization lab in 1956
  • Phoenix’s first open heart surgery in 1960
  • Arizona’s first cardiac pacemaker implant in 1973
  • Arizona’s first laminar flow (clean air) surgical suite in 1971
  • Arizona’s first cochlear implant in 1985

“It’s clear that St. Luke’s Medical Center has played a key role in bringing medical advancements to Arizona in the hospital’s first 100 years, and we will continue to be a leader in healthcare,” says Brent A. Cope, Chief Executive Officer of St. Luke’s Medical Center. “The men and women who practice medicine here bring with them a desire to innovate and a passion for medical excellence.”

St. Luke’s Medical Center will host a Centennial Celebration at 2 p.m. on May 12 in the hospital lobby. The ceremony will feature a tribute with commissioned artwork in honor of Dwight and Maie Bartlett Heard, who donated the land for the original hospital site more than
100 years ago.

The event will feature remarks from City of Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, a representative from the Heard family and Dr. Earl J. Baker, who performed the first open heart surgery in Phoenix. St. Luke’s Medical Center will continue its Centennial Celebration throughout National Hospital Week, May 11-17, with special events for physicians, staff and volunteers.

St. Luke’s Medical Center, a 226-bed tertiary care facility in the heart of Phoenix, offers a full range of medical services and centers of excellence including cardiovascular, orthopedics, bariatrics, cardiopulmonary services, and physical rehabilitation. St. Luke’s Medical Center has been serving the Valley of the Sun for more than 100 years.
