Visit the New Emergency Department at SLMC
More beds mean less wait

The first phase of a $6.4 million Emergency Department expansion and renovation is officially complete!

In the first phase of construction, the number of treatment rooms has more than doubled, from seven to fifteen, and there are seven new fast-track examination rooms for non-urgent cases. The expansion also includes a new entrance for ambulance and emergency services personnel and more parking for patients and visitors.

“At a time when emergency rooms across the valley are crowded, this expansion increases our capacity to care for more patients, and it will also mean shorter wait times for people who need emergency care,” says Paul Jenson, CEO of St. Luke’s Medical Center. “We have also implemented improvements in the patient flow process that allow us to treat minor illnesses in a timely manner, while treating more serious cases right away.”

Once the entire project is complete, the hospital will have quadrupled the size of its Emergency Department—from 4,000 to 16,000 square feet.

Annual Health Screening Reminder

All employees who were hired in a first quarter month (January, February or March) must visit Employee Health some time before the end of March 2004 for their annual health screening. All employees must complete an annual screening and OSHA form even if they are not able to receive a TB skin test. Those employees who have a history of a positive TB skin test must still come to Employee Health to complete the annual questionnaire to determine whether they need a chest X-ray.

Employee Health is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. No appointment is necessary for tuberculosis skin testing. Questions? Call Nancy Cunningham, Employee Health Nurse, at ext. 8564.

Welcome From the
Chief Executive Officer

St. Luke’s Medical Center is filled with great pride and compassion as we continue to serve residents throughout the Valley of the Sun by daily practice of the ideas set forth in our mission statement:

• We care about people, treating our patients and each other with dignity, compassion and respect.

• We act with honesty and integrity. We are accountable, one to another and as an organization to build and maintain trust.

• We encourage innovative thinking and leadership excellence, which promotes the advancement of quality and healthcare delivery.

• We persevere and strive constantly to become better.

Our employees are at the core of the quality service we provide to thousands of individuals each year who turn to St. Luke’s Medical Center at a time in their lives that is challenging. Whether it is a family member who is concerned about their loved one’s health, or a patient who does not understand their medical diagnosis, it is our employees who rise to the challenge of giving care and information while showing compassion.

St. Luke’s Medical Center has been providing healthcare in the Valley for nearly 100 years. It is our continued commitment to provide Phoenix residents with advancements in healthcare such as the latest in equipment to treat illness as well as expansion to accommodate the growing number of people moving to our beautiful state.

Again, thank you for allowing me to extend a big welcome to the St. Luke’s Medical Center family.
