Donation Marks Memorial’s First Anniversary, Zeroes in on Ultimate Sacrifices Made by Firefighters, Families
IASIS Healthcare’s Arizona Division has donated $5,000 to the Arizona Fallen Firefighters Memorial in honor of firefighters and their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the state’s residents. The donation was made during a special ceremony at the Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza on Oct. 5.
As the monument’s first anniversary draws near on Oct. 16 and Fire Prevention Week kicks off, IASIS Healthcare presented the check to the Fallen Firefighters Memorial to help in their efforts of maintaining the memorials and supporting spouses and children of fallen firefighters.
“Firefighters are our unsung heroes, risking their lives on every call that comes in. As health care providers, we understand the gravity of their work and the unbounded sacrifice they make on behalf of their families and communities every day. This donation is a token of our unwavering support for our first responders, the dedication they put into their work and the beautiful space that is dedicated to honoring those we have lost,” said Eric Paul, Arizona Market President and Chief Managed Care Officer of IASIS Healthcare, which operates three acute care hospitals, including St. Luke’s Medical Center, Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital and Mountain Vista Medical Center, as well as St. Luke’s Behavioral Health Center.
Paul presented the donation to Rick DeGraw, chair of the Arizona Fallen Firefighters & Emergency Paramedics Memorial Commission.
Firefighters are called to serve in many ways from extinguishing blazes and responding to life-threatening emergencies to performing daring rescues and fighting massive wildfires. The memorial honors 119 firefighters and paramedics who have fallen in the line of duty in Arizona.
“Losing a brother or sister in the line of duty leaves behind a community in mourning, parents who have lost a child, spouses who have lost partners and children who have lost a parent,” said DeGraw. “The Memorial has been many years in the making and with this donation, IASIS is saying they will stand with us to ensure future generations have a place to reflect and remember the sacrifice firefighters have made to protect our lives, homes, businesses and families.”
A living memorial, the Arizona Fallen Firefighters & Emergency Paramedics Memorial opened Oct. 16, 2015, after nearly 20 years of planning. Of donations received, 100 percent go directly to the Memorial’s upkeep and support of families left behind.
