Patients in need of a total hip replacement have traveled from all over the country for the advanced surgical care available only at St. Luke’s Medical Center. The orthopaedic surgeons at our hospital are committed to providing cutting-edge options for patients who want something more than a traditional total hip replacement.
SuperPATHTM is one of the latest, most revolutionary micro invasive options for total hip replacement. Most patients who elect to undergo this procedure enjoy the following benefits (compared to traditional total hip replacement):
- Less pain and scarring
- Less blood loss during surgery
- Shorter hospital stay
- Decreased risk of hip dislocation
- Fewer postoperative movement restrictions and precautions
- More natural feeling hip
How It Works: SuperPATHTM Hip Replacement Surgery
In traditional hip replacement surgery, muscles and tendons are cut and the hip may be dislocated and twisted into an unnatural position to allow room for the implant. With SuperPATHTM, the surgeon is able to perform a full replacement with a single small incision (2-3 inches), leaving the tendons uncut, the joint in tact, and the hip in a natural position. Because the procedure is only a minor irritation to surrounding muscle and tissues, many patients walk the same day.
During the procedure, the surgeon builds the hip implant inside the body. Because the SuperPATHTM method is highly adaptable, the surgeon has the ability to convert to a standard hip replacement in just two minutes should there be any complications (though this is extremely rare)
Am I a candidate for SuperPATHTM?
Patients who suffer from one of the following diseases in the hips may be candidates for SuperPATHTM total hip replacement: osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, dysplasia and avascular necrosis. The SuperPATHTM procedure may also be prescribed by an orthopaedic surgeon to correct a previous fusion or hip replacement. To learn more, call the Center for Orthopaedic Innovation at 602-251-8682.
